In 2010, Chattanooga State Community College created the WACKER INSTITUTE to prepare 650 technical employees for a new1.85 billion dollar polysilicon manufacturing plant being built in the Chattanooga region by WACKER POLYSILICON NORTH AMERICA. The Institute became operational in January 2011. The project has been an enormous success. The WACKER INSTITUTE has graduated 198 students to date. 182 graduates are already employed or hold job offers. 83% of students enrolled have persisted or are persisting to completion, a rate over three times the national average for engineering technology programs. Depending on work experience and background, graduates earn annually between $52,000 and $65,000 at WACKER. The creation of the curriculum in partnership with WACKER and the development of classrooms, laboratories, and a state-of-the-art Pilot Plant training facility will be discussed.
